In crossing the $2 billion mark, The Way Of Water could surpass the grosses of the top five highest-grossing movies of all time—the only ones to pass that mark: Avengers: Infinity War (No. 5), Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (No. 4), Titanic (No. 3), Avengers: Endgame (No. 2) and Avatar (No. 1).

Director James Cameron said Avatar: The Way Of Water needs to be the third or fourth highest-grossing movies ever to break even, and its grossing of $2 billion has been highly anticipated.

The first Avatar, released in 2009, has grossed more than $2.9 billion. The franchise’s third, fourth and fifth movies are already in the works, Cameron said.
